X = Monopoly

A reflection on Elon Musk’s “everything app” idea and whether it risks creating a new monopoly.

Social MediaOpinion

Imagine an app. You can send posts, interact with other posts and people. You can also order any kind of product, or you can book a flight. Maybe you can watch videos, listen to high-quality music and podcasts. You can also share your code with the world. You can check your e-mails. You can also buy stocks and crypto too. It's called the X App, which @elonmusk dreams to turn @Twitter into. @PayPal's first name was also X, x.com. @elonmusk has reowned this domain and put a little "x" in it. It will soon be Twitter, or the X app with its new name. That's why I believe in @elonmusk

This is a Tweet from me, shared today (April 18, 2023) at 9:45 AM CT. And a few hours later this Tweet, at 12:29 PM CT, an account that I trust named @teslaownersSV Tweeted: "BREAKING: Twitter Inc is now named X Corp". This was also confirmed with Twitter's Email to business users. This indicates that my prediction has happened. And now that this has happened, let me tell you the story of X.

If you've been a long-time follower of Elon Musk, you also probably know how important the letter X is to him too. His passion extends to PayPal, one of his first and most important ventures. PayPal's name and domain was X.com back in 1999 when Elon Musk was first founded it. In March 2000, X.com merged with Confinity and its name was changed to PayPal.

In 2002, Elon Musk has founded SpaceX with the stated goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars. The company manufactures the Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship launch vehicles, several rocket engines, Cargo Dragon and Crew Dragon spacecraft, and Starlink communications satellites.

Elon Musk was literally started to talk about the X app after buying Twitter in a Tweet which was sent by him on October 5, 2022: "Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app".

If you live in China, you've probably experienced the everything app concept much, because WeChat can be called as an everything app, which also called as in a category called "Super Apps". In short, super apps are the apps that has multiple using purposes as services.

The renaming of Twitter Inc. to X Corp. makes me think of the idea that Twitter will be reshaped and moved to the X.com domain name. Owned by Elon Musk, it's the only app you'll ever need, because all the work you are doing with different apps can be done from this app, but with an even better experience.

Actually, world is having kind of a demo of this with Meta. Think about it: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp. Mark Zuckerberg now has almost all the data of the social world with these. But with the X app, this data and even more may soon be in Elon Musk's hands.

What I'm wondering is, is the idea of monopoly scary? Monopoly was actually used to us from childhood by the game of the same name, so now monopoly seems like a standard to us. The principle of separation of powers can be as fast as monopoly when it can be super synchronized. Those who loved to play Monopoly in their childhood has turned the world into one big Monopoly game when they grew up now.
