ARTICLE FROM ENGLISH SCHOOL MAGAZINE: THE DIGITALIZING WORLD
A simple history of how everyday life shifted from physical to digital tools and services.
Now, you're probably reading this on a paper. However, most of the people read this kind of articles online. Screens are hurting our eyes when we look at them for a long time nonstop. But, let's be honest, does anybody really care? Does anybody really say "Oh yeah, this device is hurting my eyes, let's take a break"?
This would probably be a hard kind of decision, because we need them 24/7, really? No tech is equals no life, really?
In last years, companies force us to use them. Think about it, what can you do without them? Contacting? We've got messages. Having fun? We've got online games. To buy? We've got online shopping. Maybe you can listen to music on a CD, but no way to buy CDs physically anymore, you even buy CDs online. Well, when did this "oneed of to use technological tools" start and when did it develop that much? Let's talk some history.
First computers was invented in 1950s, but popularity of them have increased way later. In the later 1970s and early 1980s, world started to meet with personal computers, also known as PCs. PCs started to be seen in homes in those years. People loved them, because they loved to do simple tasks easier on digital, like calculating. Seeing this development, in 1998, two PhD students of Stanford University invented a tool that would break new ground in knowledge acquisition: Google. This was especially perfect for students. It was no longer a burden to do research in the library for hours. All they have to do was Google what they wanted to find out. Then, a bunch of resources appear and you find the information you need easily. Digital games, tools and infos, they has been a more fun and easier way to done something and spend time. Companies has realized that and started to create websites and move their physical tools to digital tools for easier access and shorter time to waste.
Let's give concrete examples of digitalization. In 1997, Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings founded a company. All they do was creating a website and shipping the DVDs of the movies people wanted to people's homes. In 2007, they moved the DVDs they sell to their website as videos, and it's called Netflix.
Another example. People used to buy cassettes and CDs of musics one by one to listen to them. Then, digital music streaming first started with Rhapsody, a service that you can subscribe by paying monthly. After subscribing, you be able to listen to musics from its huge library. It's known as the first ever premium digital music streaming service, and it's still available to subscribe and to listen under the name of "Napster".
Another popular example. In the past, the only and best way to communicate remotely was by mail. Mail is still a thing but it's not used because it takes time to reach to the receiver. Now, with e-mail and especially instant messaging, the receiver gets the message in the moment.
Finally, the digital world consists of versatile and easy-to-use tools for any kind of people, and technological developments happening day by day. Even in the time that elapsed between writing this article and reaching the reader, a revolutionary technology may have been developed and even published.
